Smoke Air Purifiers: Removing Deadly Toxins

Just about everywhere you go now, you can see what the campaign for cleaner air has done to society. Schools display proudly their ¡°no smoking anywhere on campus signs.¡± Most restaurants no longer offer a smoking section (I did always wonder how the cigarette smoke knew how to stay on its side). We¡¯re pretty good about vigilance of second hand smoke, but we don¡¯t think about smoke in the place where it could do us the most harm ¨C our home. I know I like a fire in the fireplace and, though I do make my uncle light up outside, hadn¡¯t given much thought to other sources of smoke and how I might keep them from my family. We know smoke is harmful, but what can one really do? Unfortunately, smoke cannot simply be removed by opening windows and depending on a breeze to blow out the smell, harmful effects and damage being caused to your lungs (and possibly to your whole house). There are, however, several good smoke air purifiers that can do the job and do so fairly inexpensively.

There are many different types and sources of smoke. Tobacco, fireplaces, wood, coal and kerosene burning stoves, and cooking can provide some common sources. Some are not as obvious. We live downtown and even we were affected by a wild grass fire miles away.  A factory fire we heard about on the news one night was bad enough that students at a near-by school weren¡¯t permitted out in the playground on that day and whole houses were evacuated in the area.  Removing smoke of any sort will not only improve the health of all those in your home, but it will also preserve the condition of your property and save you money, as smoke damage can be very costly to reverse.

1. All smoke contains a large amount of harmful chemicals and toxins which can be unhealthy to anyone who breathes it. Tobacco smoke in particular is especially damaging to the lungs of children, pets and anyone who has respiratory conditions such as allergy, asthma and emphysema.  Purchasing an air purifier can bring relief to anyone who lives or works around smokers.

2. Because smoke changes the proportion of gases in the air by lowering oxygen and increasing carbon monoxide, it can result in very poor air quality and induce breathing problems in people with sensitive lungs. This problem can be solved by purchasing an air purifier that uses the HEPA filtering system, as HEPA filters are specially designed to remove the gasses that result from smoke.

3. Smoke can stain many surfaces, especially white or light colored walls and ceilings. This discoloration can be almost impossible to remove and can significantly lower the value of homes.

4. The smell of smoke is extremely unpleasant to many people and often remains in the air for days or even weeks. It can cling to clothing, furniture, draperies and any other fabric.  In some types of delicate fabrics such as Lycra, rayon, nylon and spandex, the smell of smoke cannot even be washed out. The secret to removing the smell is trapping the smoke particulates and gases.

There are many high-quality air purifiers available on the market today that are specially designed to remove smoke particulates from the air, such as the IQAir Healthpro Plus Air Purifier and BlueAir models and are small enough to be portable. A good smoke air purifier does not have to be costly. A good quality one begins at less than $200. An IQ Healthpro Plus, with all of its extra features, will clearly cost more, but might be a good investment for anyone who has a concern about air quality of one¡¯s home.
